His Word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed I cannot. Jeremiah 20: 9
Kathy Jan Wheeler is the youngest of the three daughters of Chester and Frances Toungate of Austin, Texas. She met the love of her life, Wayland, in junior high school. They married while both attended college as music majors at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas.
Kathy was baptized at the age of 10, but her personal longing to be closer to God caused her to begin searching the Scriptures at the age of nineteen. She discovered the saving love and grace of the Lord Jesus Christ in the first eight chapters of Romans. As she received the One who had died for her, Kathy began a journey of transformation that is still in progress.
About a year later, her reading of the books of John, Acts, and Galations prompted Kathy to seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit. On her third day of earnest prayer, it was revealed to her that the Holy Spirit had always been involved in her life-- loving, protecting, and drawing her. She further realized that her indwelling sin nature must die with Jesus so that she would be free to live and walk with Him. By faith, Kathy trusted her Savior to cleanse her and fill her with His Spirit. From that day forward, her burning passion for the Lord and His Word has never subsided.
In 1986, the Lord led the Wheeler family to a new church plant in Georgetown, Texas. As part of the Georgetown Church of the Nazarene, Kathy found many opportunities for ministry under the leadership of Pastor Rick Power. Pastor Rick affirmed Kathy's call to fulltime ministry. He urged her to become educationally equipped in order to fulfill her calling.
Kathy believed that she must finish raising her children, David and Kristin, before she could do anything else. Once that job was done, she began the Nazarene Course of Study. Later, she and Wayland moved to Oklahoma so that Kathy could earn a degree from SNU in Family Studies and Gerontology. She worked in the SNU Business Office in collections while attending the college of her dreams. She graduated with honors in May of 2009.
Following her graduation from SNU, Dr. Clari Kinzler opened a door for Kathy as interim pastor for the Medford, Oklahoma Church of the Nazarene. She began preaching in Medford on June 3, 2009. Three weeks later the church board asked Kathy to be their fulltime pastor. The Lord provided a cabinet sales job for Wayland in Wichita, Kansas. The couple moved to Medford during the last week of August, 2009.
While pastoring and seeking God's vision for the Medford Church, Kathy continued to work toward official ordination by taking online classes from Northwest Nazarene University. On April 23, 2012, her ordination took place at Bethany First Church of the Nazarene, under the leadership of District Superinendent, Dr. Terry Rowland and Dr. Stan Toler, General Superintendent.
Kathy and Wayland continue to experience God's presence and empowerment as they minister in Medford. Through whole-hearted commitment to the Lord, His Word, and His kingdom, the Wheelers are striving to bring honor to Him as they serve together in His love and strength.
